Local SWCS Member is Honored by International Conservation Organization

BOZEMAN, MONTANA – In late July, Dr. Jim Bauder will receive the second most prestigious award bestowed on members of the Soil and Water Conservation Society.  Dr. Bauder will be designated as a Fellow of the Society for illustrating exceptional service in advocating the conservation of soil, water, and related natural resources on both national and international levels.  Bauder will join partner Fellows who meet once a year at the Society’s international conference to guide and discuss strategies for conservation.

Nominations for this honor come from all over the United States and the world to compete against other Society members who are recognized for their expertise and excellence as professional conservationists.  In 1953, the first Fellow was inducted into this honorary group.  Since then, only 255 people have been chosen for this esteemed award.  Dr. Bauder will receive indoctrination at the Soil and Water Conservation Society international conference July 25, 2025 in Keystone, Colorado.  A banquet is held in honor of the distinguished individuals who through their livelihoods have made a commitment to protecting our natural resources.

Dr. Bauder has focused his extension and applied research career on water quality and soil management during the past 25 years.  He was instrumental in the initial development of the Conservation Technology Information Center, an organization that provides profitable solutions to improve the relationship between agriculture and the environment.  Dr. Bauder has provided leadership to the academic and agricultural community of Montana and throughout the western U.S. in the area of soil and water conservation through research and education projects.  His firm belief in the application of sound science to conservation has inspired countless landowners, academics and natural resource professionals throughout the Great Plains.  Dr. Bauder has mentored doctorate and masters’ students and published numerous research bulletins and technical reports in international journals.  He also still finds time to develop resource materials for youth, teachers, and adult environmental education programs. 

Dr. Bauder is a Professor in the Department of Land Resources and Environmental Sciences at Montana State University in Bozeman.  As the Extension Soil and Water Quality Specialist, he is well known for his development of educational resources and materials for county agents and other clientele groups, with an emphasis on ground and surface water quality, irrigation management, soil and water conservation and conservation tillage.
